With anger still simmering among the British government due to the election of Jean Claude Juncker as president of the EU Commission, the press in the UK push the anti-EU sentiments a few steps further by posting reports that Romanian immigrants are being arrested by the thousands after EU restrictions on movement have been lifted.
It seems that England, as well as other countries, become more and more radical towards massive immigration. They claim that this type of immigration brings immense problems to their own societies as the immigrants come for the social benefits and welfare provisions instead of trying to seek employment based on their skills.
To some extent, that may be true. There have been many cases of people who bring their extended families to the host country and do their best to live off the privileges of the social welfare system while at the same time forming ghettos and establishing their own law of the land.
This has already provoked outrage and fuelled hatred and racism under the watchful eye of extremist and ultranationalist groups which find a perfect opportunity to express their rhetoric of hate, oftentimes with acts of violence.
On the other hand, a not so evident group of locals, have seized the one in a million opportunity to exploit the immigrants in cruel and inhuman ways by giving them jobs with extremely low wages, without any insurance and with the threat of deportation should they try to demand anything whatsoever.
Adding to the whole paranoia, many governments turn a blind eye on the matter deliberately, as they manage in this way to have economic activity in some low paying jobs that the local population may be unwilling to take. Thus, the governments themselves seem to be content with the unofficial blackmail of immigrants. This, however, increases the feelings of injustice and prejudice among the immigrants and fuels additional contempt and hatred towards the host country.
All of the above are a time bomb in the hands of the EU which is already plagued with its own identity and cohesion problems.
It is more than evident that the acceptance of very poor states into the Union was premeditated by Brussels as the EU would have access to extremely cheap labor and its multinational corporations would easily infiltrate the former Soviet markets in the hope of luring millions of new customers. Perhaps in the corridors of power, China and its appalingly cheap labor force may have served as a model of development.
New regulations for unskilled immigration should soon come into force in order to prevent a tide of racism and urban unrest. At the same time, opportunities must be given to the immigrants to learn the language of their host country and acquire basic work skills in order for them to make a better living and receive more job rights.
The danger of growing displeasure towards an increasingly beaurocratic EU will cause governents to be more cautious in moving closer towards a really federal Europe. In fact, the so-called United States of Europe has never been farther in being achieved, despite the efforts of Germany to lead such a superstate entity. If there is a referendum next year in the UK, the results against Brussels may be astonishing.
